Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does it hurt?

Acupuncture is typically not painful, some may experience a slight sensation or discomfort during the insertion of the needle. It is possible for slight bleeding or bruising at the site of insertion but it is rare and usually minimal.

  • Is it safe?

Acupuncture is considered to be a safe form of therapy when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner using sterile, one-time use disposable needles. You should feel comfortable to address any concerns with your practitioner.

  • Is acupuncture and Chinese herbs covered by insurance?

I accept CareFirst insurance but it is important to verify coverage as not all plans within CareFirst provide acupuncture benefits. Chinese herbs are an additional cost and not covered by insurance.

  • What conditions do you treat?

Some conditions acupuncture can help, but not limited to, are headaches, migraines, allergies, menstrual irregularities, pain in the body, fertility, insomnia, stress management, and autoimmune conditions.

  • Can I come in for general health maintenance or do I need to have an illness (reason, sickness?)?

Yes, you can come in for general health maintenance. Acupuncture is to promote overall wellbeing by balancing the body’s energy flow, improving circulation, boosting the immune system, and reducing stress. Regular treatments can help prevent further health issues.

  • Can children be treated with acupuncture?

Yes, infants and children are able to receive acupuncture. It has shown great benefits for various conditions. The length and time vary from age, condition, and comfort level. For kids who are not yet comfortable with needles, there are other techniques and tools I can use in place of them.

  • What can I expect at my initial and follow-up appointments?

There will be a detailed intake about your past and current medical history. I will make a diagnosis based on my assessment of your tongue, pulse, and intake. The treatment will be 30 minutes with you on the table after the insertion of the needles. Once the treatment is complete, I will return to remove the needles and discuss a treatment plan.

Follow-up and initial appointments are similar in structure, the only difference is follow-ups are 1 hour rather than 1.5 hours.

  • Can I receive acupuncture while under the care of allopathic medicine?

It is generally safe to receive care from both. It is important to inform all providers of your treatments and medications to ensure they do not interfere with each other. It is helpful all providers are working towards the same goals for your overall health.

  • How do I prepare for the session?

Make sure you are hydrated before and after your treatment. You should have a comfortable amount of food in your stomach. Loose fitting clothing is helpful but not necessary. Plan to rest for a few hours afterwards, especially if it is your visit. Come with questions and an openness to receive the energy.

  • How many sessions will I need?

The number and frequency of acupuncture sessions will be recommended after the initial appointment. It will vary depending on your condition and the time it will take for your body to be in balance.
